Peter Jackson Talks 'The Hobbit' Running Time & Dolby Atmos

Peter Jackson is determined to make The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey one of the most talked about films of the year. In addition to the 3D format, it was announced today that the film will also be mixed in Dolby Atmos. Now Dolby is the newest state of the art sound system that creates the ultimate listening sensation with sound being able to fluidly pan over the audience, ultimately making you feel like you are inside the movie. . Of the decision to move to Dolby, Peter Jackson said quote "I strive to make movies that allow the audience to participate in the events onscreen, rather than just watch them unfold." Other films that have been released in Dolby are The Disney/Pixar animated film "Brave," Fox's Taken 2, and the upcoming "Chasing Mavericks"

There are about 80 to 100 theaters that are expected to have the Dolby sound system in place, but the cost of it could slow down the rollout as it can run up to about $50,000 per installment.

Jackson also told Empire that the film is running shorter than what we have seen in the past, at only 2 hours and 40 minutes so far, which is already shorter than Fellowship.
